If the browser uses a proxy, this will not work. In this case, the only way is to use HttpConnection which handles automatically proxy configuration in a browser. Another point, if the client applet is behind a firewall, you have to be sure the firewall will not block the port you are using. Usually, firewall admin doesn not allow traffic others than HTTP,FTP ... . In this case, the only solution is to do http tunneling to connect to your server through the HTTP server.
